Don Reber is a Gold Legacy Life Member of the Wayne Billeaud-Melvin Cormier Memorial Post 9822, Lafayette, Louisiana. Don is serving as the District 4 Commander for 2024-2025. Don was elected as State Commander on June 19, 2022 at the Louisiana State Convention in Alexandria, Louisiana. He was awarded the distinct honor of All-American Department Commander at the VFW National Convention in Phoenix, Arizona on July 25, 2023. He is also a Life Member of the Military Order of the Cooties, a Life Member of the DAV, and a Member for Life of the American Legion.
A VFW member since 1965, Don served as Post Adjutant of Post 49 in Mobile, Alabama for four years after returning home from Vietnam in 1968. Don’s career as an executive with Sears and Home Depot took him all over the country for the next thirty-four years. Upon retiring he quickly became involved again with the VFW. Don was an All-State and All-American Post Commander for Post 8971 Eunice, Louisiana in 2018-2019 and again in 2019-2020. Don was also appointed as National Aide-de-Camp twice and was a "Century” recruiter for 2022-2023 and again in 2023-2024 having recruited over 100 new members in both years.
Don is the son of a WW2 Veteran and grandson of a WW1 Veteran. He served with the United States Army Security Agency from 1964 to 1968, he served in Vietnam from February 1965 through May 1968. Reber’s awards included the Bronze Star, thirty-three Air Medals, three Meritorious Unit Citations, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, RVN Gallantry Cross w/Palm, and Vietnam Tet Campaign Medal.
Don’s service to the community include: Past Board member of Saint Landry Parish Economic and Development, Past Chair of City of Eunice Economic Development, Past President of LSU Eunice Board of Advisors, current board member of Business and Technology Advisory Board at LSU Eunice.
Don married his wife, Thuy in Saigon, Vietnam in March of 1968. They have three grown children, two boys and a girl; seven grandchildren, six boys and a girl; and three great-grandchildren, two girls and a boy. Thuy Reber is a member of VFW Auxiliary Post 9822.
